Symphonic Band Concert: Celebrations and Remembrances

The Augustana Symphonic Band will perform both new and traditional works in a concert themed "Celebrations and Remembrances."

Program

“Celebrations” by John Zdechlik. The work was commissioned by the Medalist Concert Band of Minneapolis, in 1990 celebrating its 20th anniversary.

“Hymn for the Innocent” by Julie Grioux, a musical remembrance of those loved and lost.

“Sojourn of Dreams” by Kevin Walczyk. This work remembers the life of a high school band director from Oregon who died suddenly while on a mission trip in Africa. In four continuous movements, it features folk songs and instruments from Zimbabwe.

This concert features faculty soloist Dr. Samantha Keehn performing John Mackey’s “Harvest Concerto for Trombone and Wind Ensemble.” It features the cycle of pruning, rest, and rebirth found in a typical growth cycle of the vine.

And finally, in celebration of the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s Reformation, the band will perform a commissioned work by James Stephenson entitled “This is most certainly true” as well as Jim Curnow’s “Rejouissance,” a fantasia on “A Mighty Fortress is our God.”
