ACQUISITION INFORMATION

Books received from Elaine Orheim, Swanson's niece, in 1978. Letters received from Ms. Orheim in 1981.

HISTORICAL NOTE

Tracy Swanson attended the Augustana Conservatory of Music from 1901 to 1904.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The papers date from 1888 to 1903 and measure 1 linear inch.  The papers consist of two series: Correspondence and Texts.

Correspondence (1901 and 1903) includes two letters written home to her parents in Calumet, Michigan, detailing her school life at Augustana.  Tracy Swanson tells of her studiousness and dedication, her budgeting of limited funds, and a trip to Chicago, among other topics.  One report card from her first term is also included.

The books in the Texts series (1888, 1897, 1899, 1902, and 1903) relate to Tracy Swanson's musical studies.   The titles suggest that Tracy Swanson's pursuits at the Conservatory were not limited to practice or the technical aspects of the piano, but rather a greater appreciation for the art and philosophy of music.

The books themselves have been separated from the collection and cataloged as Special Collections books.  Photocopies of the title pages and ephemera found in the texts remain with the manuscript collection.

The titles of the separated texts appear below.
