CUSTODIAL HISTORY

Most materials donated by Betsey Brodahl in March 1987. 1990 Call for nominations added by Special Collections staff.

This collection originally existed in two distinct iterations: MSS 49 Mortar Board records and MSS 50 Aglaia Honor Society records. Per current archival standards, in July 2014, the two collections were combined because they represent the same organization. MSS 50 was renamed the Augustana College Mortar Board records to reflect the most current name of the organization.

EXISTENCE AND LOCATION OF ORIGINALS

1960 newsclippings photocopied and originals discarded.

HISTORICAL NOTE
Aglaia Honor Society was founded in 1940 as an honor society for senior class women at Augustana College. The society chose to name itself after Algaia, or "Brillance," one of the three graces of Greek mythology. In 1946, the group began a long campaign to establish itself as a chapter of the Mortar Board, a national women's honor society. After twenty years of attempting to fulfill the necessary requirements, Augustana College's Mortar Board chapter was initiated in 1965. In 1975, per requirements outlined in Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, the national administration of the Mortar Board voted to open enrollment to male students, and Augustana's chapter soon became coeducational.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Augustana College Mortar Board records, 1940-1990 and undated, consist of two boxes of material. Box 1 contains the organizational records of the Aglaia Honor Society and the Mortar Board, as well as materials documenting the period of transition between the two groups. Aglaia Honor Society's records include the group's constitution; an outline of its initiation services; meeting minutes, 1940-1960; photocopies of news clippings, 1960; and correspondence concerning Aglaia's application for Mortar Board membership, 1946-1965. Mortar Board records include correspondence concerning the group's installation ceremony, 1965; annual reports, 1963-1987, including correspondence and other papers collected in preparing the reports; a copy of the nationally-distributed Mortar Board handbook, 1985-1987; and a 1990 call for nominations for Mortar Board membership issued to Augustana College faculty. Box 2 contains the Mortar Board's 1965 framed charter.
