The Mississippi Valley Dietetic Association (MVDA) was formed in 1948 by dieticians in the Tri-Cities (Davenport, Moline and Rock Island) area hospitals who felt that a professional organization would help promote better communications among themselves as well as provide an opportunity for educational and professional growth. Several planning meetings were held in the fall of 1948 in Moline, Illinois, and Davenport, Iowa. The first official meeting of the MVDA was held on March 10, 1949. The object of the MVDA, according to their constitution, is to "provide direction and leadership for quality dietetic practice, education, and research and to promote optimal health and nutritional status of the population, as defined by the by-laws of the American Dietetic Association" (1985 Constitution). Membership to the MVDA was expanded to include dieticians, educators, and others working in the field of nutrition within a fifty mile radius of the Tri-Cities (and later the Quad Cities). As of 1986, the MVDA had 66 dues paying members. The MVDA was granted affiliation with the Illinois Dietetic Association in 1969 and with the Iowa Dietetic Association in 1982. The national umbrella organization is the American Dietetic Association. |
The Mississippi Valley Dietetic Association records date from 1948 to 2011 and measure 2.5 linear feet. The collection is arranged into 5 series: Administrative, Membership, Programs, Affiliates, and Scrapbook.
The Administrative series includes materials pertinent to the organization on a local level including history of the chapter, their constitution, meeting agendas, reports, and correspondence.
The Membership series consists of booklets containing membership lists and contact information ranging from 1972 to 2011.
The Programs series includes a sampling of projects and programs that the MVDA participated in or created. Notable in this series are the legislative initiatives that involved members of the MVDA at the state and national level. This series also includes materials relating to local Science Fairs and more general nutritional outreach programs.
The Affiliates series contains materials relating to the American Dietetic Association, the national affiliate of the MVDA, as well as the Illinois Dietetic Association and the Iowa Dietetic Association, the state affiliates of the MVDA.
The Scrapbook chronologically documents the first 35 years of the MVDA and includes newspaper clippings, photographs, yearbooks, programs, and other paper materials. Of special interest are the yearbooks that include lists of officers, meeting dates and programs, and membership. The yearbooks included in the scrapbook date from 1969-1984 and are interspersed throughout the book. A detailed inventory of the 127-page scrapbook is available. |
