The Augustana Parents Club was founded December 9, 1947 in La Grange Park, Illinois. The Tri-Cities (Rock Island, Davenport, Moline), North Chicago, and Rockford, soon had their own clubs. Meetings were held four times a year in September, November, February and May. The Parents Club was initially called the Mothers Club; however, the name was changed in 1959 to include the fathers as well. The Club’s main activities were fund-raising and social events. Special projects of the Parents Club included FSTUN, a program whose goal was to furnish the student union, and the Friendship Fair, which was designed to raise funds for an international student exchange program. Fund-raising activities included ice-cream socials, potluck dinners, newspaper drives, and bake sales. The Parents Club was made up of eight committees: Publicity, Hospitality, Program, Ways and Means, Membership, Parliamentarian, Historian, and Auditing. |
The Parent's Club records are organized into three series: minutes (1957-1973), student coordinator files (1957-1965), and scrapbook.
The Minutes (1951-1973),are from the Quad-City chapter of the Parents Club. Meetings usually consisted of an opening prayer, a musical performance presented by an Augustana student, and statements from the secretary and treasurer. Often meetings were concluded with a presentation from a member of the faculty or administration. Details of and plans for social events and fund-raisers are noted frequently in the minutes. New officers were always elected during the May meeting. Included in the book of minutes is a copy of the Parents Club constitution, as well as a list of past presidents (1951-1967).
Student Coordinator Records (1957-1965) contain files and information maintained by each student coordinator during her term in office. Each folder contains correspondence, annual reports, lists of officers, and articles and clippings pertaining to Parents Club activities and events. Annual reports detail tasks accomplished by the student coordinator and Club, as well as suggestions for the improvement of the Club.
The Scrapbook (1951-1962) is primary filled with newspaper clippings about the club as well as some correspondence. Due to the poor condition of the scrapbook, a preservation copy of the entire scrapbook has been made and the original has been discarded. Some clippings and other paper materials had already come loose from the scrapbook prior to making the preservation copy; these items were removed and set aside and labeled as "Loose items removed from scrapbook." All original items excluding newspaper clippings have been saved and are arranged in the order that they were placed in the scrapbook; these items are labeled as "Scrapbook contents." |
