ACQUISITION INFORMATION

Many brochures were originally addressed to, and perhaps collected by, various faculty and staff members at Augustana.

HISTORICAL NOTE
The Art Department of Augustana College sponsored many on-campus and off-campus events to involve students of all majors as well as the surrounding Quad Cities community in the study and appreciation of art. For example, in addition to the many art exhibitions represented in this collection, the Art Department was involved with at least two community programs called Arting at Augie and Kaleidoscope. The latter is an art enrichment program for young children sponsored by both the Augustana College Art Department and the Quad City Arts Council.

Also of note is the Japan Art Festival on Campus of 1968, which was a month long festival in which Japanese artists conducted workshops on the Augustana campus. Some of the visitors to campus included members of the Japanese Diet, potters, sculptures, artists, koto and shamisen players, theologians and mimes. The event coincided with the larger festival hosted by John Deere Administrative Center which displayed over 100 pieces of art.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Department of Art collection is fairly small and consists of informational materials about exhibitions by students, faculty, or visiting artists. There is minimal material about the department itself, all of which can be found within the Academic folder, however, the department is well-represented among the exhibitions it sponsors. The collection has three series: Exhibitions, Community Art Programs and Miscellaneous.

The Exhibitions series (1963-1987 scattered and undated) contains brochures, flyers, and posters about artwork and exhibitions by visiting or student artists.

The Community Art Programs series (1969-1978 and undated) contains literature and forms about the art outreach programs offered on the Augustana campus.

The Miscellaneous series (1974-1978, 2006 and undated) contains a drawing of Old Main featured in the 1974 Observer; all of the material directly related to the academic department; correspondence which includes letters defending certain controversial student art displays; and more recently, an ARTS calendar from 2006.
