The Augustana Symphony Orchestra, also known as the Augustana College Orchestra in its earlier years, is a student-based musical organization that features select soloists from the college. It has been an active organization in the college even from its early years and has been referred to in yearbooks as any number of names including simply "Orchestra" or "Symphony Orchestra."
According to Conrad Bergendoff's book Augustana: A profession of faith. . ., an organized orchestra was first formed in 1893 on the Augustana campus (96). The early orchestras were much smaller than today's: the orchestra mentioned in the 1899-1900 College catalogue had fifteen members. The orchestra grew in size until it reached its current size of 75 to 85 members. The orchestra accompanies the Handel Oratorio Society each year in their concert series. |
The collection features performances divided according to season: Fall, Winter and Spring concerts. Each concert spotlights the talent of select Augustana students and faculty as soloists. The collection consists of four series: Programs, Articles, Treasurer's Book and Posters.
The Programs series (1912-1991, scattered) contains programs, invitations and flyers to various performances by the Symphony Orchestra.
The Articles series (1968-1977) contains newspaper articles about select soloists and performances.
The Treasurer's Book series (1930-1934) contains a treasurer's log book detailing the College Orchestra's finances.
The Posters series (1980, 1984-1987, undated) contains large posters advertising symphony performances.
