CUSTODIAL HISTORY

Estate gift, 1988. Some photographs received from Mrs. Valerie Davis of Fruitland Park, Florida.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Bernard Y. Wickstrom was a student as Augustana College from 1947 until 1950. He was an editor for the Observer and the president of the Augustana chapter of the Alpha Delta Journalistic Fraternity. Wickstrom was also a member of the Phi Omega Phi (POP) fraternity, serving as secretary in 1948 and vice president in 1950. He won various awards for his prose and poetry from the school's literary magazine, SAGA, and he graduated in 1950 with a major in English.

Wickstrom's father, George Wickstrom, was a well-known columnist for the Rock Island Argus until he bought the Zephyrhills News in Zephyr Park, Florida in 1955. Bernard became editor-in-chief of the newspaper after his father's death. He eventually sold the paper to the New York Times. Bernard Wickstrom died on September 10, 1978. A stage in Zephyr Park, Florida is named in his honor.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Bernard Wickstrom Papers are arranged in the following series: Newspaper Articles, Artwork, Fraternity and Photographs.

The Newspaper Articles series contains three 1950 articles from the Rock Island Argus noting Wickstrom's awards from both SAGA and the Augustana Writers' Club and his participation in an Augustana News Society awards ceremony.

The Artwork series consists of a cut-and-paste drawing of the Old Main tower signed by Bernard Wickstrom.

The Phi Omega Phi Fraternity series contains captioned photographs from a POP scrapbook (1948-1950) and a roster of POP members in 1950.

The Photographs series (1949-1950 and undated) includes photographs of Wickstrom, campus events, and unidentified students. It also contains many photographs of POP fraternity functions such as two "informals."
