Emil Swanson was born in 1891 in Sweden and came to Moline, Illinois in 1908. He received his B.A. from Augustana College in 1923. During his time in Moline, he worked at several vocations including store owner, school teacher, school principal, factory safety inspector, and owner of apartments. Swanson was also was active in the municipal government where he served for 8 years as an alderman, 4 years as a member of the county board, and was also Democratic candidate for Mayor in 1945. He founded the Scandinavian-American Roosevelt club of Moline. |
Though this is a small collection of papers that belonged to Emil Swanson, there are several interesting pieces including his inspection card issued upon his departure from Liverpool en route to the United States in 1908, an emigrant contract from 1912, a passenger list and other ephemera from a trip to Sweden in 1937, and a letter of endorsement for Mayor of Moline. Also included in the collection are two personal letters in Swedish and two photographs. |
