CUSTODIAL HISTORY

Harriet Wheeler donated some of her correspondence with the Alumni Association of Augustana College and her alumni memorabilia to Special Collections at an unknown date. In April 2011, these materials were added to MSS 207 Alumni Association of Augustana College collection under a series for 1927 alumni materials. In May 2011, these materials were separated from MSS 207 and combined with various Harriet Wheeler papers found by Special Collections library staff during cleaning.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Harriet Rachel Wheeler was born on 23 June 1903 in Davenport, Iowa. She attended Cornell College before enrolling at Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois in September 1924. Wheeler was a member of the Woman's Club, and was often on the honor roll. She graduated in 1927 with an A.B. in History. After her graduation, she remained involved with the Alumni Association of Augustana College through correspondence and gift giving.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Harriet Wheeler papers date from 1921 to 1975 in two linear feet. The broad scope of the collection demonstrates Wheeler’s interest in Augustana College and her continued participation with the college through the Alumni Association for many years after her graduation. Wheeler saved personal memorabilia from her commencement, her time at Augustana College, and the Alumni Association. In addition, she maintained a correspondence with the Alumni Association about gift giving and alumni events. This collection also contains a few loose scrapbook pages made by Wheeler that are filled with newspaper clippings about Augustana, and memorabilia for Augustana events, such as invitations, programs, and tickets. Lastly, Wheeler collected newspaper articles, copies of The Observer, and Augustana College Bulletins* during her time at Augustana and after her graduation; these articles demonstrate Wheeler’s interest in college events and information about Augustana during and after her attendance.

*n.b. The original copies of The Observer, collected from 1924 to 1946, and the Augustana Bulletin, collected from 1926 to 1976 [bulk 1926-1957], were separated from the Harriet Wheeler papers because these materials are represented elsewhere in Special Collections.
