HISTORICAL NOTE

S.O.S. was a women’s service organization at Augustana College from 1971 until 1974. S.O.S. was briefly the counterpart to the all-male Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity, until the two groups merged in the mid-1970s. S.O.S. was approved as an organization in March 1971. The group’s purpose was to create interest and participation in community involvement. S.O.S. worked with Alpha Phi Omega on certain projects and initiated its own service projects such as the Easter Seal Drive, a cancer fund drive, and Red Cross events.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Augustana College S.O.S. records, 1971-1972 and undated, consists of one folder of material. The collection includes two letters documenting the Student Personnel Committee’s approval of the S.O.S. constitution, three letters thanking S.O.S. members for participating in service projects for Augustana College’s Friendship Fair and the Foundation for Crippled Children and Adults’s Easter Seal Drive, the S.O.S. constitution, an undated membership list, and a description of the Amiga Program, a joint venture of S.O.S. and Alpha Phi Omega meant to “provide an opportunity for guys to meet girls… on an equal basis as human beings.”
