This collection was created in 2010-2011 by combining two existing manuscript collections in Special Collections, MSS 42 Augustana College Office of the Dean/Office of Academic Affairs and MSS 185 Augustana College Academic Affairs. Materials assembled to create Augustana College’s self-study for the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools were also added in 2010. These had originally been stored in Room 210 in the Franklin W. Olin Center for Educational Technology as a “Resource Room” for the NCA reviewers. Some materials were removed by the contributing departments before the assembled collection was released to Special Collections. In 2011, the Self-Study Reports prepared for the NCA from 1964, 1975, and 1985 were separated from MSS 287 Self-Study Report of Augustana records and combined with the North Central Association Accreditation records series in this collection. In 2012, copies of the Faculty Handbook were removed from the section of books waiting to be cataloged and added to the Facult Handbook records series. In 2013, items were added from Jeff Abernathy's tenure as Dean of the college as welll as items separated from Augustana Institutions concerning the Lilly Endowment Foundation.

The Office of Academic Affairs and its predecessors, including the Office of the Dean, have overseen the following functions at Augustana College: faculty development, assessments of Augustana College curriculum, accreditation, establishing the Augustana College budget, coordinating the general education curriculum, academic advising, and linking to the faculty governance structure at the College.)

The Office is currently comprised of the Augustana College deans, the director of advising, the registrar, the Director of International Programs, the Director of the Augustana Center for Teaching and Learning, the Directors of Honors/Logos and Foundations, and the Grants Officer in the Sciences.

In 1959, Augustana College was granted an endowment from the Lilly Foundation in order to strengthen religion and values in schools. From 1959-1962, ten professors were chosen each year to write, present, and discuss a research paper on the role of a Christian teacher in his or her department.

The Augustana College Office of Academic Affairs records date from 1948-2013 in 18.3 linear feet (44 boxes). The collection has been arranged in the following series:

The Academic Policies and Programs records, 1948-2008 and undated series includes materials used for drafting and/or revising campus academic policies and programs. These items include various committees’ papers, class and college statistics, survey summaries, program proposals, correspondence regarding future academic plans for the college, and reports on academic programs and campus offices.

The Faculty Employment records, 1995-2013 series contains Faculty Welfare Reports, tenure reviews, information about visiting foreign professors, Esther Rose A. Romarate and Mayamma Joseph, President’s Cabinet Binders, Faculty Newsletters, Faculty Retreats, New Faculty Receptions, grants, and salary information.

The Augustana College Faculty Handbook records, 1964-2000 series contains copies of the faculty handbook from the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, as well as documents used by Augustana faculty to draft the 2000 edition of the Faculty Handbook. Items include samples of other colleges’ and universities’ faculty handbooks, the Task Force committee’s meeting notes regarding revisions of the handbook, correspondence regarding the handbook, and revisions and drafts.

The Financial records, 1998-2005 series includes budget statements, invoices, and correspondence relating to the creation and management of the college budget.

The Augustana College Board of Trustees, 1992-2007 series includes Augustana College Board of Trustees binders from meetings, conferences, and retreats, and governing documents of the college used as references for the college’s constitution and bylaws by the Office of Academic Affairs.

The North Central Association Accreditation records, 1964-2006 series contains the materials compiled for the five Self-Study reports prepared by Augustana College for the NCA reviewers in 1964, 1975, 1985, 1995, and 2006.

The Lilly Faculty Seminar: Faith and Values, 1959-1962 series contains faculty papers discussing the relationship between various disiplines, the liberal arts, and faith.

The Church Relatedness, 1975-1997 series contians articles and studies relating to the relationship of the Lutheran Church and the liberal arts.

The materials in the first five series of the collection (those from MSS 42 and MSS 185) arranged by topic, then chronologically within each topic.

Materials from the 2006 NCA review within the North Central Association Accreditation records, 1964-2006 series have been kept in original order – as they were arranged in the “resource Room” for the use of the NCA reviewers.

The materials in the Lilly Endowment Foundation, 1959-1962 series are arranged alphabetically by author's last name.
