CUSTODIAL HISTORY

Recieved from Robert Cooper, 2011.

HISTORICAL NOTE

Theodore Celms, Augustana College professor from 1949 to 1963 and 1967 to 1973, was one of the many scholars evacuated from Eastern Europe during WWII. Celms was an eyewitness to the Russian Revolution during his early life in Latvia and later lived as an expatriate in Germany. He was brought to Augustana College by former president Conrad Bergendoff to give students a perspective on Europe from a European scholar. His Philosophy of Culture class was popular throughout the duration of his time at Augustana. His former student, Robert Cooper Augustana College class of 1963, compiled the collection.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Robert Cooper Collection on Theodore Celms consists of photocopies of several short biographical articles on Dr. Celms, including announcements about his death, and photocopies of Cooper's class notes from Celms's 1961 Philosophy of Culture course.
