HISTORICAL NOTE

Jean Schilling was a long time member of the Black Hawk Hiking Club, and went on over 25 Big Hikes. She won the hike attendance award in 1975-1976 and 1977-1978. During 1977 she was one of the club’s directors, arranging three hikes. She served as the club’s Vice President during 1986-1987 and 1987-1988. SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Jean Schilling Collection dates from 1975-2003 and measures approximately 3.2 linear feet. The collection consists of one series: Big Hikes. The Big Hikes series (1975-2003) contains scrapbooks compiled by Jean Schilling, mostly of her own photos of the Black Hawk Hiking Club’s annual Big Hikes, which were the culmination of the club’s activities for that year. Additional materials include newspaper clippings, letters, photos from fellow hikers and memorabilia. The photos are a mix of group pictures and scenery shots. Three of the albums are not Big Hikes; they are small group ski trips to Estes Park, Colorado in 1981, 1984, and 1985. There are three photo albums that are missing from the collection because Schilling did not attend the Big Hikes. These hikes include: Vermont 1984, Canada 1985, and Washington 1990. Also, the 1997 Big Hike to Michigan was mislabeled as 1993, and can be found in Box 9 with the 1997-1998 trips.
