CUSTODIAL HISTORY

This scrapbook was donated by the Wakefield Heritage Organization in the town of Wakefield, Nebraska, in 2008. The organization had received the scrapbook from the Collins family.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Helen Collins was born in 1901 in the town of Wakefield, Nebraska. Her father, Henry Collins, was a prominent businessman in the area; her mother, Sophia Collins, was the daughter of the Salem Lutheran Church's founder. Helen was one of seven children her father hoped would all attend college; Helen and her sister Elsie selected Augustana. While at Augustana, Helen was a member of Sigma Pi Delta (the SPEED's) and the women's basketball team. Although Helen actually graduated (with honors) from University of Nebraska, she still considered Augustana College her alma mater and frequently attended Sigma Pi Delta reunions.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Helen S. Collins scrapbook contains photographs, newspaper clippings, invitations, programs, letters, scorecards, ticket stubs, and fellow students' autographs. These document Helen's involvement in social activities at Augustana College (including those with the Sigma Pi Delta sorority) from 1919-1922. The scrapbook also contains some later items dating into the 1970's, such as newspaper clippings about alumni and memorabilia from Sigma Pi Delta reunions.
