The Roosevelt Outing Club was an organization at Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, for students and faculty from 1924-1930. Although the group had already existed for several years, the Roosevelt Outing Club was formally organized in 1924 with Dr. Fritiof Fryxell, professor of geology, as the faculty advisor. Its purpose was to promote and “provide wholesome outdoor recreation for its members,” to promote the beautification of the Augustana campus, and to “do all in its power everywhere to further the preservation of places of natural and historic interest.”
The club’s primary activity was organizing day trip hikes at nearby natural parks such as Vandruff’s Island in Rock Island County, the Maquoketa, Iowa caves, and many others. In its attempt to help beautify the Augustana Campus, the club also installed the sun dial on the pedestal between Old Main and Denkmann Memorial Hall and made plans to plant elm trees on campus and place name plates on the trees around campus. Because the materials in the collection stop in 1930 and the Augustana College Catalogs and Rockety-I yearbooks contain no further records about the club after 1929, we assume that the club was no longer officially active after this time. |
The Roosevelt Outing Club records date from 1924-1930 in 2.5 linear inches and primarily includes books of meeting minutes and the treasurer’s financial records. The collection also includes a constitution of the club, notes, and membership records kept by the club. These materials were used by the club for organizing trips, planning meetings, governing the club, and record keeping. |
