CUSTODIAL HISTORY
The Samuel Gardner and Lucy Hartwell Pope papers were donated to Augustana Special Collections by Robert I. Leonard of the Museum of the Rockies at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana in 1985. They were donated to the museum from Dr. Michael W. Hager.
 
HISTORICAL NOTE

Samuel Gardner immigrated from Bedford, Massachusets to Kewanee, Illinois in 1859 and later moved further west.

Lucy Pope was Gardner's cousin.

 

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Samuel Gardner and Lucy Hartwell Pope papers contains correspondence from Samuel Gardner to his parents and his cousin, Alzina Hartwell Fletcher, Pope's sister. Pope's correspondence is also primarilty with her sister, Alzina, but also to her cousin Gardner and parents. The letters date from 1852-1860 and detail daily life.

There is also an inventory of the letters included in the collection.

The letters in the Samuel Gardner and Lucy Hartwell Pope papers are arranged in chronological order and maintained in the original folder divisions from the Museum of the Rockies.
