CUSTODIAL HISTORY

The bound notebook was found in the basement of Sorensen Hall by Timothy Schermer (Office of Institutional Research) and transferred to Special Collections prior to 2000.

HISTORICAL NOTE

The Class of 1916 was founded in 1912 by members of the freshman class of the Collegiate Department.  Membership was open to any student “properly enrolled in the said class and not affiliated with any other class.”  The only committee created in the Constitution and Bylaws was for “Entertainment,” with the provision that other committees could be created if needed.  Conrad Bergendoff, fifth president of Augustana College, signed the freshman class roll in 1912 but graduated with the class of 1915. There is no evidence of the organization’s activities in any of the yearbooks during their time at Augustana.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Class of 1916 notebook dates from 1912 to 1916 and measures .5 linear inches.  It contains evidence of the inner workings of the organization, including its constitution, minutes, and membership. As the collection consists of one bound notebook, it is represented in a single series. Most of the content is written in the first 70 pages, though the handwritten senior class roll is on pages 147-148.

SYSTEM OF ARRANGEMENT

The materials are bound in the notebook and are in chronological order.
