The Hauberg Collection is one of the largest in Special Collections. It touches on Native American history, local history, family history, and many other topics.

Shown here is a scrapbook titled Flora of the U.S. and Europe put together by a graduate of Augustana College. At the bottom of each page is a literary quote. Special Collections holds the papers of many Augustana alumni, faculty, and students.

Special Collection’s holdings are strong in children’s literature, especially those of the golden age of illustration in the late 19th and early 20th century.

The Gutenberg Bible, or the 42-line Bible, was the first book to be printed with moveable type in the West. Special Collections holds representative books from various eras of printing history.
“Portrait of Black Hawk.” Thomas McKenney and James Hall. History of the Indian Tribes of North America. Philadelphia: Daniel Rice & J.G. Clarke, 1836-1844.
Special Collections has materials related to Native Americans with a particular focus on the Black Hawk War. Included are monumental works like McKenney and Hall’s and those of George Catlin, and various editions of Black Hawk’s autobiography.
Willard Glazier. Headwaters of the Mississippi. Chicago and New York: Rand, McNally & Co., 1893.
This book tells the story of both early and recent explorations of the Mississippi and of the discovery of its true source. The Upper Mississippi Valley collection is one of Special Collections’ largest. It contains numerous books on the history, discovery, and travel of the Mississippi.
Anders Lindeberg. Svensk Biografi. Stockholm: Olof Grahn, 1818.
This book originally belonged to King Oscar I of Sweden and was bound for him with his royal insignia on the front cover. This book was part of a gift of King Charles XV of Sweden (Oscar’s son) to Augustana College in 1862.
